Commentary versus actual token vesting
1) Fair Launch and Supply Architecture The maximum supply of the network is strictly hard-capped at 21,000,000 TAO. Unlike modern blockchain infrastructure projects, Bittensor conducted no Initial Coin Offering (ICO), executed no pre-mines, and designated no initial allocations or privileged token pools for venture capital investors, founders, or advisors. Every single TAO token in existence must be earned through active participation, capital commitment, and verified computation within the ecosystem. 2) Halving Schedule, Emissions, and Distribution Matrix In alignment with Bitcoin's deflationary design, TAO features an algorithmic halving schedule where token issuance cuts in half for every 10,500,000 blocks written to the ledger (approximately every 4 years). As of mid-2026, approximately 9.6 million TAO have been mined and are currently in circulating supply. - Phase 1 (0 – 10,500,000 TAO): Generated at a velocity of 1 TAO per block, milestone was met on December 14, 2025 - Phase 2 (10,500,000 – 15,750,000 TAO): Current phase operating at 0.5 TAO per block (approximately 3,600 TAO per day), projected to run until late 2029 - Phase 3 (15,750,000 – 18,375,000 TAO): Future issuance phase dropping further to 0.25 TAO per block, projected to last until 2033 - Phase 4 & Beyond (Continues to the 21,000,000 cap): The reward undergoes a halving at each subsequent threshold every 4 years Every newly minted token enters the ecosystem through a macro-routing layer before being divided at the micro-subnet level. Once routed to a specific subnet, the newly emitted TAO tokens are strictly divided based on a fixed algorithmic ratio across three core group categories: - 41% to Mining Rewards (Miners), allocated directly to the execution layer to incentivize servers providing high-quality AI services - 41% to Mining Rewards (Validators & Stakers), allocated to the consensus layer to reward nodes responsible for evaluating miner performance - 18% to Mining Rewards (Subnet Owners), disbursed to subnet developers to fund ongoing protocol architecture 3) The Evolution of Emissions: From Native TAO to Dynamic TAO (dTAO) The mechanism through which participants receive their rewards has undergone a critical architectural upgrade to scale the network's multi-tenant AI market. The Legacy Mechanism: Historically, newly emitted TAO rewards were calculated and paid out directly in native TAO tokens to the wallets of miners, validators, and owners across all subnets, regardless of individual subnet utility or external demand. The 2026 Dynamic TAO (dTAO) Upgrade: To remove human centralization and introduce free-market discipline, the network transitioned to the dTAO architecture. Under this model, the underlying core layer still generates native TAO emissions according to the standard block rewards. However, these TAO tokens are mathematically routed and deposited directly into an automated market maker (AMM) liquidity pool dedicated to each individual subnet. Now, with the new dynamics, upon receiving the TAO influx, the subnet's AMM contract programmatically mints and distributes subnet-specific Alpha tokens to its participants according to the fixed 41% / 41% / 18% allocation rule. Miners and validators now earn specialized Alpha tokens that represent the discrete market value of that specific AI domain. Participants retain full financial flexibility; they can choose to hold the subnet's Alpha token to speculate on its growth or interact with its AMM pool at any time to instantly redeem their Alpha tokens for liquid, base-layer native TAO.
